Lynne Elvins is a design strategist and runs her own consultancy business.
Lynne, and her partner Emma, were the first same-sex couple to be approved for adoption in the city of Bristol, UK. At that time, they faced significant resistance from inside the system and outside from colleagues, when for them it was just the normal process of two people wanting to start a family.
She told her story in a TEDx talk to an audience of 2,000 people that has since received over half a million views.
Lynne’s perspective comes from being in the LGBTQIA+ community and working as an independent consultant for small businesses and creative agencies. Her journey as a same-sex adopter has involved dilemmas from work situations as well as navigating the education system when you have a child that needs additional support.
